Dr. Parker Brookie is an Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies specializing in contemporary Latin America with a focus on post-dictatorship memory, gender studies, and queer studies. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where his dissertation, “Queering Time in Latin America,” examined gender and racial violence in 21st-century literature and film from Argentina, Chile, and Brazil through queer theories of time.

Dr. Brookie has received several awards for teaching and research, including the Dana B. Drake Award for Excellence in Teaching (2019) and the LGBTQIA+ Advocacy Award (2024) at UNC Chapel Hill. His broader research takes comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to exploring state violence and LGBTQ issues in Southern Cone Latin America and Brazil, supported by various fellowships and grants. His published research appears in journals such as Chasqui and Romance Notes. In June 2023, he was a research resident at Uberbau House: Contemporary Art Research and Residency Center in São Paulo, Brazil.

In the classroom, Dr. Brookie employs a student-centered approach, encouraging collaboration and student autonomy as well as integrating diverse knowledge forms such as literature, film, and visual art. He previously taught at the Universidad de Sevilla and UNC Chapel Hill. At Converse, he teaches courses like Elementary Spanish II and Introduction to Latinx Studies and is developing a course on Queer Latin American Literature and Culture.

In his free time, Dr. Brookie enjoys playing piano, gardening, and spending time with his partner and their dogs, Sebastian and Ralphie.
